❋ The CLIMB Cards Online Tool

Behavioral insights explain how people actually think, decide, and act.

What are the CLIMB Cards?

The CLIMB Cards are a collection of 30 behavioral insights that can help design low-cost solutions for common behavioral challenges found within programming focused on the lives of children and families in all contexts, including in the Global South.

The CLIMB Cards are particilarly useful when knowledge is not enough to change behavior, often due to social norms, ingrained habits, friction, or just because people are busy.

The CLIMB framework groups the 30 insights under five principles:

Convenient, Lasting, Intruguing, Mobilizing, and Blueprinted.

The principles complement each other - a strong solution usually draws more than one.

This tool puts all 30 CLIMB insights in one place. Browse them, see how they’ve worked in real programs, and selct the ones most relevant to your challenge.

❋ Step 1: Define the new behavior

Step 1Define the new behavior

Get specific: who needs to do what, differently, and in what context?

Answer six questions to define your behavior.

Answer four questions to define your behavior.

Step 2Diagnose the challenge

Let's assume that everyone is familiar with the new behavior, but they are not practicing it. Why not?

You can take a piece of paper and write down as many reasons as you can for why the new behavior is not taking place before proceeding.

Now, think through whether each principle could be a barrier to changing a behavior by answering these 10 questions. More than one is usually at play.

Open a card and review the behavioral insight, examples, and tips. Does this insight feel relevant for your challenge? If so, select it, and jot down how you would apply this insight to your challenge. Notes save automatically with the card and carry through to the summary in Step 6.
